RABBI JOSEPH FRIEDMAN
Noted Rabbi and Lecturer
Rabbi Joseph Friedman was born in Lakewood, NJ and raised in Silver Spring, MD and Kew Gardens, NY. He studied at Ner Israel Rabbinical College (Baltimore, MD), where he earned a BA in Talmudic Law. In 1995, after serving first as NCSY Midwest Regional Director and then as the Rabbi of Beth Israel Congregation, in Omaha, NE, he was approached to serve as the Spiritual Leader at B'nai Israel Congregation in Norfolk, VA. He led a congregation of over 230 families, was Rav HaMachshir of the Vaad HaKashrus of Tidewater; founded the Norfolk Area Community Kollel (NACK), Torahs Chaim (a K-8 day school) and Yeshivas Aish Kodesh (a boy's Yeshiva High School). Rabbi Friedman's energy and enthusiasm attracted many new people to the synagogue for the first time. In 2005, after many years in the pulpit, he decided to return to the private sector, and moved to Memphis. He volunteers his spare time to his community, primarily as a lecturer/teacher at the Margolin Hebrew Academy/Cooper Yeshiva of the South and the Young Israel of Memphis. He was recently commissioned as a Captain in the Tennessee Air National Guard, serving as a chaplain. Rabbi Friedman's rabbinic approach has always been based on inclusivity and being non-judgmental. He is a Religious Zionist and a follower of R' Samson Raphael Hirsch's "Torah Im Derech Eretz" philosophy. Rabbi Friedman and his wife believe that ALL Kiruv takes place around the Shabbos table. Their home has been open to, quite literally, thousands of people, and they attribute almost 100% of their success to that approach. We are delighted to have Rabbi Friedman join us this Pesach. He will be overseeing our synagogue services giving D'var Torah's and Drashas on a variety of topics, as well as conducting inspiring Shiurim and lectures.
